How to Connect Your Amazon Echo Dot to an External Speaker via Alexa Amplifier and Pump Up the Jams

At VAIL Audio, we understand the importance of having excellent sound quality while using Amazon’s Echo devices. Although these devices are known for their affordability and portability, they may not always meet your expectations when it comes to audio output. That’s where connecting your Echo Dot device to an external speaker can make a significant difference. In this post, we will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to connect your Echo Dot device to another speaker, with and without an Alexa amplifier, enabling you to enjoy an enhanced listening experience.

Amazon Echo devices have gained immense popularity due to their voice-controlled capabilities and seamless integration with Alexa, Amazon’s virtual assistant. However, the built-in speakers of Echo Dot devices might not deliver the depth and richness of sound that you desire, especially when playing music or enjoying immersive audio content. By connecting your Echo Dot device to an external speaker, you can take your audio experience to the next level, filling your room with high-quality sound.

Why Connect Your Amazon Echo to an External Speaker?

The Amazon Echo devices, such as the Echo Dot and Echo Pop, are known for their affordability and smart features. However, when it comes to sound quality, these compact devices may not always meet your expectations. In comparison to the larger Echo and Echo Studio models, the Echo Dot and Echo Pop tend to deliver sound that is less robust and lacks depth, especially in the bass frequencies.

During our testing, we have observed that the Echo Dot and Echo Pop, while being budget-friendly options, may not provide the same level of audio performance as their larger counterparts. Despite improvements in the more recent generation of Echo Dots, the sound output of the Echo Pop, in particular, was found to be quieter and had a weaker bass response.

If you find that the sound quality on your Amazon smart speaker is lacking or doesn’t deliver the immersive audio experience you desire, connecting it to an external speaker can make a substantial difference. By connecting your Echo device to a high-quality external speaker, you can enhance the audio performance and enjoy a richer, more satisfying sound.

Whether you want to listen to your favorite music with greater clarity, watch movies with immersive sound effects, or simply have a more enjoyable experience while using your Alexa device, connecting it to an external speaker can significantly improve the audio output. With the help of the following sections, we will guide you through the process of connecting your Amazon Echo to an external speaker, allowing you to unleash its full audio potential.  We go into more detail on connecting to an Alexa amplifier below.

How to Connect Your Echo Device to an External Speaker

Connecting with a Wired Connection

If you prefer a wired connection, you’ll need a standard 3.5mm audio cable with male connections on both ends and a compatible device. Unfortunately, the Echo Dot (5th Gen) and the Echo Pop do not have an audio output jack. However, for all other models, including the Echo Studio, you can follow these steps:

1. Plug one end of your audio cable into your speaker’s Aux In connection.

2. Plug the other end into the Echo’s Aux Out connection, located right next to the power cable’s connection.

3. Power on your connected speaker, and it will play the audio that would normally play from the Echo when you ask Alexa to play music.

Pairing with a Bluetooth Speaker

If you prefer a wireless setup, you can stream the sound from your Echo to a Bluetooth speaker. Amazon certifies compatible speakers with the Works With Alexa label, ensuring compatibility. Follow these steps:

1. Put your Bluetooth speaker in pairing mode.

2. Open the Alexa app on your device.

3. Navigate to Devices > Echo & Alexa.

4. Choose the Alexa device you wish to connect to your speaker.

5. Select “Connect a device” under the Bluetooth Connections section in the app.

6. The app will search for nearby Bluetooth devices to pair with your Echo.

7. When your speaker appears in the list, tap its name to initiate the pairing process.

After successful pairing, the Bluetooth speaker will be recognized as a connection in the Alexa app for the selected Echo device. Alexa will also announce the successful pairing. From now on, when you ask Alexa to play music or perform other tasks, the sound will be piped through your Bluetooth speaker.

To disconnect the speaker, simply tap its name in the Alexa app and select “Disconnect,” or say “Alexa, disconnect.” You can easily re-establish the connection by saying “Alexa, connect” to connect your Echo to the last paired Bluetooth device. If you wish to permanently remove the speaker from your device, select “Forget Device” in the Alexa app and go through the pairing process again to reconnect.
